The Zarahemla Geological Foundation is a unique, non-profit foundation. It is in every respect a true phenomenon. Dedicated to reconstructing the chronology of Precolumbian America, it has no creed except the Pursuit of Truth. Founded in 1986 by Michael M. Hobby, it has evolved dramatically over time, especially since early 1999. We have devoted hundreds of thousands of dollars to Book of Mormon-related research and will increasingly devote more as our international outreach continues to expand.

The Field Research base website will soon be available in a dozen languages. The entire corpus of research produced by Hobby, his partners, and associates over a 35-year period (1974-2009) will be translated and available in their entirety on Research Base websites. The Zarahemla Monthly e-letter will be available in the same languages.

Our research associates, members, and regional personnel are both LDS and non-LDS, all working together to further Book of Mormon archaeology, geography, numerical system studies, and geology. Members of all faiths are involved and participating in a variety ways and a variety of roles.

The following previous Book of Mormon materials are now available on this site. An enlarged list will soon be available. To purchase any item(s) listed below, copy the following URL and paste it in the search box at the top of your screen:

NOTE TO SCIENTISTS regarding Chapter Six in ANGULAR CHRONOLOGY, "How Did it Happen?":
The principal mechanics I remain convinced are most likely responsible for both the Cardinal Shift of 700 B.C. and the widespread geomorphological and structural geological folding, faulting, uplifts, displacements, overthrusts, extension (such as the 100-mile extension (not compression) faulting which formed the Basin and Range Province of the western U.S.), etc. associated with the CRUCIFIXION CATASTROPHE are described in scientific format in the following article:

"The Catastrophic Role of Fluid Pressure and Electromagnetic Phenomena in the Mechanics of Overthrust Faulting," Hobby, Michael M., KRONOS, Vol. IX, No. 1 (1983); pp. 1-16

THE ZARAHEMLA QUARTERLIES

The Zarhemla Quarterly was published by the Zarahemla Geological Foundation in two volumes of four issues per year for two years. The QUARTERLY dealt exclusively with BOOK OF MORMON topics, especially Book of Mormon HISTORY and GEOGRAPHY.**

All issues will soon be available in their entirety on this site. They will also become available in a single COLLECTOR's Portfolio for libraries and individuals.

Because the QUARTERLY was much like NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, each issue contains many photographs, maps, satellite photos, etc., in full, four-color photography. Thus they were far more costly to publish and remain more costly to reproduce than simple Black and White books or articles. EACH INDIVIDUAL ISSUE (or BULK order) is now individually printed and shipped by Lulu.com for the foundation, because the technology is now available and the QUARTERLY is no longer in print.

The following issues are the first to be made available; others will appear in the list as they become available. The Collector's Edition will follow:

"Dear Sirs, Recently while in Salt Lake City, I purchased one of your QUARTERLIES [Volume II, Number 1]. I found it to be most interesting and having a unique slant on things. Having read many books by John L. Sorenson and Richard Hauck's latest book, I found your approach to the Nephite geography most unique . . ." - Rick Branch, Arlington Texas

"Dear Michael and June, ... we remain intrigued with your undertaking regarding the foundation. We have found every aspect remarkable. Our hope is that the glory be to the Lord and that your prayers may be answered. The direction your research is taking is exciting" - Larry and Kaye, Salt Lake City, Utah

A QUICK NOTE: The ZARAHEMLA FIRESIDE BROADCASTs, introduced by Dr. Paul R. Chessman, Professor emeritus of Religion at Brigham Young University, introduced each of the 14 segments, written and narrated by Michael M. Hobby. As many of these segments as survive will be posted as clickable audio files on this site as they are secured and converted to digital format. They will appear as a subgroup in the sidebar.

** NOTE: The ZARAHEMLA GEOLOGICAL FOUNDATION still exists. Ongoing Book of Mormon related research and articles which contain evidence supporting the BOOK OF MORMON will appear as posts on that site, viewable without charge. It's URL is shown at the top of this post.

The Programs and Goals of the ZARAHEMLA GEOLOGICAL FOUNDATION are in most respects the same as during the period in which the QUARTERLY was published. Foundation Director, Michael M. Hobby, will soon be permanently based in Mexico, initially in Oaxaca, conducting further research pertaining to ANGULAR CHRONOLOGY, but ultimately, the Foundation will be based in Merida, Yucatan. Merida is located on the crystal clear Caribbean. It is on the western corner of the Yucatan peninsula, opposite the major tourist haunts, Cancun and Cozumel, near Chichen Itza. Just offshore is where the meteor impact believed responsible for the Cretaceous extinction of ~65 million years ago occurred. Tectites and a (global) Iridium anomaly are found there.

Merida is my favorite city, certainly in the top two or three, in all of Mexico. To provide a sense of the planned home of the foundation where members will be welcome just to visit or to attend a unique foundation-sponsored and organized guided tour of the Maya area, the following informative quotes are drawn from the MEXICO website. We will be adding many more over the coming months, including photo slide slows, videos, and other exciting information. The current address of Michael Hobby in Merida is:

Col. Garcia Generes
Merida, Yucatan, Mexico

"Merida is the capital city of the state of Yucatan. Known as "White City" because of the large use of white limestone and white paint this traditional city depicts much of the splendor of Colonial Mexico. This is by no means to say that Merida still exists in a time warp and the contrary could be said. There is old and new exhibited in everything from fashion to architecture.

The Spanish Conquistador Francisco de Montejo founded present day Merida in 1542. An insight into the horrendous pain and suffering of the people who were brutalized by the conquering conquistadors exists in magnificent paintings that are on display in the Governor's Palace located in downtown Merida.

Left in seclusion for many years because of the difficulty of traveling to Merida the people of this region have cultivated a distinct contemporary society that is unique in Mexico.
Merida is nothing like Cancun or Playa del Carmen and if you want to experience Mexican culture while staying relatively close to the Caribbean Sea then Merida is a great place to go. There are lots of interesting shops to browse in, and if you seek some familiarity, the Merida WalMart is well stocked and also has a food-court.

Outstanding regional dishes and traditional music and dances local to this region can be found in restaurants, theatres and shops housed both near the main plaza and in palatial mansions along Paseo de Montejo - a boulevard fashioned after Paris' Champs Elysée. Progreso, Merida's port city, is 30 kilometers north and is an interesting area to enjoy the beaches and to see the salt-flats and flamingos.
Being centrally located, Merida is a practical hub to explore numerous ruin sites and ecological wonders. Many charters fly into Merida or you can take a four-hour bus ride from Cancun. There are also two highways connecting Cancun and Merida plus many roads winding their way through the jungle from Tulum."

The Yucatan is part of the heartland of the Maya civilization, particularly during the Maya Post Classic period, north of the Maya Lowlands (Fewer than 2,500 of ~20,000 known Maya sites with ruins have been academically studied, located principally in these areas and Belize. Belize is due east of the Maya Lowlands. Hobby will also, in collaboration with Jeffrey Coleville [The Structure of Mesoamerican Numeral Systems with a Comparison to Non-Mesoamerican Systems, doctoral dissertation, 1985, Tulane University; New Orleans, La.], be working to resolve a problem between the Zapotec and Mayan numeral systems which may contain informative data regarding dynastic and population movements during both the Maya, and potentially, earlier but somewhat overlapping OLMEC periods.

Merida is home to the legendary Matador and award winning pastry chef Esteban Colberto.

A household name in Mexico, Esteban's humble beginnings are widely known and even taught as fables in schools.
