You might find the following comment I posted on a pro-Mormon site by what I characterize as a folk Mormon fool interesting. He writes fool's gold intended for the layman, especially the unlearned, and thinks he's doing God service. As I try to bluntly explain to him, he is his own, and the Book of Mormon's worst enemy:
Your assertions are ignorant and absurd. You appear to have virtually no familiarity with the archaeological record or how much was known in Joseph Smith's day. Walled ruins were already known and documented. Mounds, including connecting roads, including innumerable artifacts were the principal curiosity of everyone, and most thought they represented the twelve tribes of Israel. I am a geoarchaeologist, meaning both an archaeologist and a geologist. The very idea that you would offer such shallow reasoning and statements, obviously intended for laymen and not professionals, is evidence that you seek only to paint a picture that non-Mormons lack the faith to "know" what you apologize as unknowable. What a fool you appear to be to the educated who can see right through you.
In fact, the "core" of the Book of Mormon IS true. I have confirmed it in dozens of ways, not by wishing and hoping, but by scientific research (STAY OFF MY SIDE!!). You are part of Mormon folklore that makes embarrassing assertions in a so obviously uneducated, colloquial way. You do more damage to your cause than you can imagine. It makes professionals like Paul Chessman was, a dear friend of mine, ashamed!
If you want to know some actual facts about why the Book of Mormon is true (NOT the Mormon religion!!), go to my website: http://www.geoarchaeology.blogspot.com and in the side panel, click on the linked sites where you will find all the proof you need. In YOUR case, you most need to go to the Zarahemla Geological Foundation site referenced at the top of the Mormon spiritual site (this link is obvious when you go there).
The main problem with almost all religious people is that, regardless of their particular faith, they mistake the "Holy Spirit," which is real, as a confirmation that THEIR faith is the (only) correct one. In truth, as Joseph says he was told, they are ALL wrong. It should be obvious to all, though it isn't, that truth is very different than what we expect or think it is or must be. The average person CANNOT confront his belief system. It is like the fear of death to him, because it leaves him feeling alone in the universe with no place to go. As primates, we NEED to believe that daddy will take care of us if we just obey him. Never mind that he commands us to slash open the abdomen of the woman next door, pull out her unborn child and smash its head against the wall (and while we're at it, kill her cow too). Come on, anyone would be a better "god" than that (I thought killing the unborn was a terrible sin?).
Enough for now. If you're as intelligent as you seem to think, posing as an authority of all things, you'll find out everything you need to know by reading the many posts on my linked websites. Of course, that requires effort-REAL effort-not the shallow tripe you dish out for the unlearned and unwary with such apparent ease. What you write is Fool's Gold.
Thank you for your interest and participation,
Michael M. Hobby
